For generation of electricity, natural gas has always been the top fuel choice for Bangladesh. In 2005-06, 20350 million kwh (mkwh) electricity was generated using natural gas which rose to 35822 mkwh in 2015-16. It is interesting to note that electricity produced by furnace oil has steadily been increasing which stood at 8673 mkwh, an incrase of more than 7000 mkwh from 2005-06. Electricity produced using coal decreased over the last 10 years from 2005-06 to 2015-16. Diesel also seems to be getting a little more attention for producing electricity over the last couple of years.
Total generation of electricity using these fuels also more than doubled from 22978 mkwh in 2005-06 to 52193 mkwh in 2015-16.
